Nine die in Oyam road accident


OYAM- Nine people died and seven others critically injured on Wednesday in  a road  accident at Kamdini Town Board in Oyam District.


 The incident happened at about 12:20pm when a truck registration number UAZ 579C collided head on with a pick-up truck registration number UAT 374B that was carrying people and merchandise.


 The victims who were returning from Kamdini Market were travelling to Wirao Parish in Aber Sub-county, Oyam District.


 Oyam District Police Commander Mr Mr Najibu Waiswa, said seven people died on spot, while two passed on at St Pope John Hospital, Oyam where they had been hospitalised.


 The victims have been identified as Geoffrey Onono, the driver and owner of the pickup, Rose Akello, Grace Akude,  Simpo Apio, Florence Oluge, Sarah Adong,  Grace Awulu, Rose Obongi and an unidentified child. The particulars of those wounded were not established.


 The majority of the victims are residents of Wirao Parish, the DPC said.


The outgoing North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, Mr Manshur Suwed, said the trailer was impounded.


Its driver is detained at Kamdini Police Station as investigations continue.
