KAMPALA.
The ministry of health has announced an outbreak of measles in the districts of Kamwenge in western Uganda and the eastern district of Kamuli.
In a statement dated August 9 and signed by the the acting director general health services, Prof Anthony Mbonye a surveillance confirmed the outbrak in the two districts.
“The ministry wishes to inform the public that there is an outbreak of measles in some parts of the country. A number of cases have been confirmed in Kamwenge and Kamuli districts.
The statement indicates that the sub counties of Butandisi, Nawanago, Balawoli, Nabwigulu and Kamuli municipality are the most affected.
The statement further states that the most affected are children above between five and 14 years.
Although the Kamuli outbreak was not explained, that in Kamwenge is attributed to the high influx of refugees from neigbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.
Religious cults in Kamwenge have also been blamed for stopping unsuspecting parents from immunizing their children against the killer diseases.
The ministry appeals to the public to avoid contact with infected children and report suspected cases to nearby health facilities.
Rubella in Alebtong
Another disease, Rubella has also been reported in Alebtong district.
Rubella is an infection caused by the rubella virus characterized by feverr, sore throat and fatigue. A rash that sometimes itchy which may appear after two weeks may also be a sign of the disease.
