KALANGALA –
Residents at Kachanga Landing site on Funve Island, Mazinga Sub county, have burnt down a house belonging to a crime preventer, Geoffrey Kyalimpa, who allegedly caused the death of Polojo Ivan ,31, a Tanzanian national, operating a fishing business in the Ssese Islands.
The incident happened on Sunday evening after Kyalimpa together with Bogere Friday; another crime preventer went to the lake to arrest Polojo who had had a misunderstanding with his wife.
Kyalimpa and Bogere were tipped off by Polojo’s wife; the pair then jumped into a fibre boat with a 25 horse power engine and started pursuing Polojo who on trying to elude them drowned.
According to the area councilor Gerald Kalyango, the residents later waited for police to arrest the two crime preventers before dawn but no officer police swung into action.
“The residents burnt down one of the crime preventer’s (Kyalimpa) house. They also wanted to throw him into the lake but he ran into hiding.” Kalyango said.
Derrick Lusiba, an eye witness, in an interview with the daily Monitor said the residents are still demanding to see police arrest the two crime preventers if not, “We are ready to punish them ourselves because they acted foolishly.”
Kalangala District Police Commander Richard Musisi was not available for a comment on the matter, however the Officer in charge of criminal investigations, Yashaba Chris, said that police has already dispatched a team of officers who will move to the landing site to arrest the crime preventers.
