KAMPALA- Just days after national coach Dick Katende’s abrupt death, boxing is already bearing the brunt. The national boxing league begun just last weekend but fixtures which had been scheduled for today at MTN Arena-Lugogo have been postponed to allow mourners attend his burial.
Katende, 56, died mysteriously after collapsing in his washroom at his home in Naguru, Tuesday morning and will be buried this afternoon at his ancestral home in Palabek, Kitgum District. Katende coached the Bombers between 1990-2007 and 2014-2015.
“Here is to formally inform all the stakeholders that our league matches meant for Friday, have been cancelled to allow mourners attend our beloved coach’s funeral,” said Fred Kavuma, spokesman Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) during the Katende’s public viewing inside the Arena, Wednesday.
“We shall resume on August 14, with the corresponding fixtures…sorry for any inconveniences.”
Cobap Boxing Club lead the nine-club log after dominating stuff at the league premiere last Saturday.
They collected 14 points from six straight wins, two walkovers and one loss against East Coast Boxing Club on day one.
Every win fetches two points, while a walkover fetches one.
