Jinja- The Jinja District environment officer, Mr Moses Maganda, has given distillers of the local potent gin, waragi, two weeks to stop polluting a swamp in Mpumudde Kimaka Division in Jinja Town or their operations will be shut down.
Mr Maganda issued the ultimatum last Tuesday, as he, together with officials from the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) in Jinja, carried out an on the spot inspection of the area.
The swamp has been at the centre of a conflict between officials from the UPDF Senior command and Staff College, Kimaka, and waragi distillers who operate from within close proximity to the school, over the pollution of the environment of the neighbourhood.
Both parties have for more than six years now been trading accusations over responsibility for polluting the swamp in the area.
Directive
During the inspection, it was established that the army was not responsible for the pollution.
Mr Maganda directed the distillers to find alternative means of disposing of waste.
“You have seen that the sewerage system inside the institution does not affect residents. The problem is being caused by you. I am not going to hesitate to close you off if you do not stop discharging your waste directly into the swamp,” he said.
