KAMPALA.
Police has rescued a one day old baby after spending a night in a pit latrine in Bulonda village, Kajjansi in Wakiso District.
Mr Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, said the baby born on Monday morning was dumped in a latrine by its mother, Rose Nanyanzi, at 6pm on the same day.
He said the residents became suspicious and informed the police yesterday at 6am when Nanyanzi could not reveal where she had put the baby she had delivered the previous day.
“The residents called us this morning suspecting that Nanyanzi had dumped her baby in a pit latrine. Our team from the directorate of fire and emergency rushed to the scene and retrieved the baby- alive,” Mr Onyango said.
Mr Onyango said the baby was given first aid and rushed to Mulago hospital for further treatment alongside its mother who in an attempt to end her own life, had taken poison and was unconscious.
“We hope she will tell us why she dumped the baby in a latrine when she gains conscious. We condemn such acts and ask mothers to inform the police when they have challenges,” he said.
The police have preferred charges of attempting to commit suicide and attempted murder against Nanyanzi. She will be arraigned before court once police is done with investigations.
