KAMPALA.
Veterans and pensioners have become the new target for fraudsters, police have said.
Ms Polly Namaye, the Deputy Police spokesperson, said there is increasing outcry of pensioners and veterans who have fallen victims of conmen.
“The police force is investigating several cases of fraud in which members of the public especially veterans and pensioners have lost money and property to impersonators and conmen,” Ms Namaye said while addressing the Monday national security briefing at Naguru police headquarters.
The police publicist said Hoima, Masindi, Luwero, and Nakasongola are the districts that have registered the highest number of fraud cases in the recent past.
She said the fraudsters purport to work for finance institutions that give money on credit and those that give phone services. Others impersonate as security officers and extort money from unsuspecting victims.
Some of the fraudsters on police hunt list include Davis Okurut one Muhumuza who impersonated as employees of Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) at Buwoma landing site in Koome Island, Mukono District where they stole a motor boat engine.
“After their mission, the culprits failed to pay for a special hire services but instead gave the driver an army uniform,” Ms Namaye said.
Ms Namaye called upon the public to be suspicious of unknown people who contact them for money or any other assistance. The public was challenged to always seek for police intervention in case of strangers.
Nearly a fortnight ago, the Kampala Metropolitan police arrested the chairman of Nabisaru zone in Makindye for engaging in a Shs70m land fraud. In the same week, Mr Herbert Muhangi, the commander of the Flying Squad unit, paraded two men who were conning businessmen disguising as security operatives.
In June KMP police arrested a man who conned MPs millions of shilling promising to help them secure cabinet jobs.
