MBARARA- Police Constable Isaac Ssegawa, the driver of a police black van frequently used in the arrest and transportation of Opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye to and from police cells in Kampala, has been charged with theft in Mbarara Grade One Magistrate court and remanded.
Court presided over by Ms Sanula Nambozo last Thursday heard that Mr Ssegawa, attached to police special operations unit in Kampala, together with six others, stole eight vehicles, laptop and two bags between March and May this year.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the offence. Through their lawyer Mr Judson Agaba, they applied for bail, saying they have stayed in detention for long and that they have permanent places of abode.
However, State Attorney Priscilla Nyakake said Mr Ssegawa being a police constable will interfere with investigations and asked the magistrate to deny him bail.
Ms Nambozo adjourned the matter until August 19.
“Since it has already exceeded 6pm, I cannot decide on this matter. I have adjourned to August 19,” she said.
Mr Ssegawa was arrested on June 11 and has since been in police detention in Kireka, Kampala.
