KYANKWANZI- Activists are calling for maternal death audit as a measure to reduce maternal deaths in the country.
The activists said maternal deaths in most parts of the country, particularly in Kyankwanzi District, remain inadequately addressed.
“Maternal mortality remains inadequately addressed and the problem is further aggravated by under reporting of the maternal death cases,” said Ms Susanne Muwanguzi, the executive director Action for Rural Women’s Empowerment (ARUWE), a local charity operating in the district.
Ms Muwanguzi was addressing journalists last Friday.
“An investigation conducted by ARUWE in Gayaza Sub-county, Kyankwanzi District, recently revealed that mothers continue to die during delivery but the deaths are not documented,” she said.
The findings supported by Open Society Initiative for East Africa (OSIEA) aimed at enhancing community-led advocacy to improve delivery of maternal health services in the district.
Ms Muwanguzi said some maternal death cases are not reported because some people are afraid of being held accountable. Current estimates put Uganda’s maternal mortality rate at 438 deaths per 100,000 live births.
Intervention
The Health ministry under the Uganda Health Systems Strengthening Project, however, said it is revamping maternal death audit across the country to check the high cases of maternal deaths.
