Some of the nominations for the Full Woman makeover were from our very own staff at Monitor Publications. Janet Akongo, a graphics designer, was one of those nominated.
Convincing Janet Akongo to take time off and be dressed and made up was not easy as she likes to focus on anything but her appearance.
But even she could not believe the person staring back at her in the mirror by the time it was over. And who wouldn’t; seeing how different the Akongo after differs from the one before the makeover!
Choice of outfits
Annet Kiconco who selected the outfits, says; “Janet mentioned to us that she does not wear dresses. Her statement sort of sparked my curiosity and immediately I started wondering how she would look in them.
I selected for her dresses and my goodness, she ended up looking more beautiful than I imagined. On the other hand, I chose the suit just to see how she would look in corporate wear.
She looked stunning in the suit too as it was the right fitting. I did not choose very bright colours for Janet as she does not like them much.”
I could not believe I could look this good
“I did not really want to do this makeover thing. I was like… no, no, no! I cannot do this! I eventually changed my mind after the Full Woman editor and a few other colleagues convinced me that it would actually be a good thing for me and that there would be a professional team to style and apply my makeup.
They added that it would provide such a great opportunity for me to also get styling and fashion tips. This was why I eventually gave in to the idea.
My colleagues must have forwarded my name because they wanted to see my other side as I am often simple in my dressing. For instance, I imagine they wanted to find out what I look like in a dress as I never wear them. In my wardrobe, one will mostly find trousers, skirts and blouses. I do not even love wearing makeup. I am a natural kind of person. What I often do is simply shape my eyebrows, put on a little bit of lip balm and I am ready for the day. I used to have long hair and was accustomed to plaiting and blow drying it.
However, in 2013 after growing tired of it, I cut it off. I thought of growing it again but realised it would be another hustle having to sit for long hours in the salon. There was the option of dreadlocks but I was advised that it would not work well with the texture of my hair. I therefore decided to keep it short, a style many people seem to appreciate.
My favourite makeover look was the blue and white dress with flowers that had a coat. It brought out the lady in me. The suit was also good, however, it made me look like a lawyer or Member of Parliament. It was too official for my kind of work and personality. What surprised me most was the whole eventual outcome of the makeover.
I remember going, “Wow! I can also look like this!” the first time I looked in the mirror. I felt completely different from my usual self. On the other hand, I felt good and beautiful especially because my colleagues at work appreciated my makeup, which I kept on for the rest of the day. I am grateful to the team for the experience.”
THE NOMINATIONS
• I nominate Janet. I think she needs this make over because it will make her a better person in terms of appearance and even make her appreciate putting some time and effort into appearance.
• I nominate Ms Janet Akongo. This friend of mine is a beautiful woman who needs help to discover what clothes suit her. I understand that she is a mother, who is probably very busy, so, the makeover would really be good for her.
