MAYUGE: At least two people have been confirmed dead and another 50 left homeless in Nakitwala village in Kigandalo Sub County in Mayuge district after a storm hit the area on Sunday.
The storm hit the village during a 3-hour afternoon downpour which destroyed two classrooms at Nakitwala Primary School, several residential houses and gardens of food and cash crops.
The identities of the dead could not be easily established but, Bunya East MP, Mr James Kyewalabye Majegere, in whose constituency the village lies said that they had been killed after the walls of their houses came down on them.
Mr Majegere was later the same evening joined by the village LC1 Chairman Mr Sudi Balikowa in organizing the evacuation of victims to various schools in the constituency where they are being accommodated pending the provision of aid to enable them return to their homes.
The legislator said that the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness has been approached to intervene as the victims are lacking both accommodation and food because even the crops in their gardens were destroyed.
“As a leader I have done what I can, but the Disaster Preparedness Ministry needs to come with some help because I cannot manage everything as an individual,” he said.
