RUKUNGIRI. The Rukungiri Chief Magistrates Court on Monday dismissed with costs an application by the Forum for Democratic Change candidate, Ms Betty Muzanira, to have votes for Rukungiri Woman Member of Parliament recounted.
Ms Muzanira lost to Ms Winnie Matsiko of NRM in the in February 18 elections.
According to results announced by the district registrar, Mr Pius Ahimbisibwe, Ms Matsiko polled 58,994 while Ms Muzanira got 54,966.
Through her lawyers, Ms Muzanira accused the Electoral Commission of committing errors during the announcement of the results and in the declaration forms.
According to the affidavit filed by the applicant’s lawyers, results from six polling stations including Rushasha Primary School in Nyakagyeme Sub-county, Bufunda Primary School and Ihimbo Primary School in Bwambara Sub-county, among others were not captured at the time of announcing the Ms Matsiko as winner.
While dismissing the application, the Chief Magistrate, Mr Rutakirwa Praff, said the recount cannot change the outcome of the final tally, directing the applicant to pay costs of Shs40m. However, Ms Muzaniira said she will appeal to the High Court to have her application heard.
