KAMPALA. Three appearances for the Weatherhead Gazelles at the Africa Cup of Club Championships (ACCC) and there is one constant, the poor performances continue.
In two losses to Ghana Revenue Authority (14-0) and Egypt Sharkia (9-2) at the 28th edition going on in Zambia, the Gazelles have conceded 23 goals, seven more than they shipped in during the edition hosted in Kampala in January 2014. “The endurance of the team is stretched,” midfielder Josefien de Ridder said.
“We have few substitutes and the heat is too much. But to put things into context, the Ghanaians and Egyptians are far away in terms of commitment, physique, fitness and skill,” she added.
Weatherhead’s woes escalated when Joan Andika got a foot injury while defending a penalty corner on Monday and could be unavailable for today’s encounter against Zambia’s De Stars.
Siddy Alum, added to the side from Weatherhead Jaguars, is struggling to fit in. “The Egyptians have better structures and a pool of hundreds of players to select from. We can’t compete against them when we are just a group of random players,” de Ridder noted.
But the team hopes to return with at least a win in their group game or classification games. “Our next match is at 8am (today) so we won’t have to worry about the heat, hopefully we can win,” de Ridder said.
