Kapchorwa. The Sabiny Culture and Tourism Festival is set for tomorrow and is expected to be graced by Kenyan deputy president William Ruto and President Museveni.
Speaking to Daily Monitor last week, Mr Kalifani Chemutai, the chief executive director of Sebei Cultural Centre, said they had extended invitations to the two leaders.
“We have invited Mr Ruto as the special guest and he is warm to the idea. President Museveni, like he did last year, will also be the chief guest at the function. The event is aimed at promoting Sabiny culture and tourism in Sebei,” Mr Chemutai said.
The event had earlier been set for October 10 and 11 and again for November 11 to November 14, but the organising committee claimed they did not have support from government and had to look for other means to fund the event.
Mr Ruto visited Kapchorwa early this month as Mr Museveni was campaigning in the district.
The Kenyan deputy president refuted claims that he was in the region to campaign for Mr Museveni, saying his visit was to confirm and cement peace, trade and unity between the two countries.
Last year, the event was held on December 29 and a host of activities were held to showcase Sabiny culture and norms at the cultural centre in Kakwai, Kapchorwa District.
The cultural village is situated on the border of Mt Elgon National Park and its location on the hills gives it a spectacular view of the plains.
What to expect
During the festival, several activities will take place, including a marathon, circumcision ceremony, cultural exhibition and more than 10-km trailing that will start from the Exploration Centre and end in Teryet, where the high altitude training centre is to be built.
