Net curtains are one of the most common window treatments because of their functionality. They provide privacy while allowing natural light into your house.
Ms Annet Kamba, the proprietor of Phiona’s Interior Designers, says there are various types of net curtains, some of which have other names that are familiar to everyone.
Kamba warns that one also needs to know some features of quality curtains, such as over locking, and how to measure curtains since they are usually ordered by metre. She also asserts that a few accessories will be necessary in order to properly mount a net curtain in a window.
“A choice has to be made between using net wire and curtain rods. When purchasing net curtains, one must consider the different types, measurements of the width and drop length of curtains, and how to hang them,” Kamba explains.
Some people while shopping lose track of what they would really want. But in the case of net curtains, one should remain focused since there are many attractive and related curtain designs that do not accomplish the same job as a net curtain.
Kamba describes them this way: “Net curtain have a material that is meant to mute strong light from entering a room.”
Blown up net curtains also add a decorative touch to any room. “When the window is open, net curtains allow wind to blow through a room while discouraging insects and mosquitoes from entering, making them a popular option for homes,” she adds.
Types of net curtain
Musa Kintu, a sales manager at Daffodils Textiles, says almost all net curtains today are made from polyester. However, there are a few different styles and materials one should be familiar with before purchasing them. There are normally three types of net curtains one should look out for.
Jardinière is a net curtain with a curved bottom hem. “The curve creates an archway in the window that is not covered by the curtain, providing a view while regulating the amount of light that enters through the rest of the window,” he explains. These curtains are ideal when there is a pretty view that would be otherwise hidden by other curtain types.
Voile net curtain is a fabric that is usually made of polyester, cotton, silk or other fabrics, just like regular net fabric, but the weave is finer, resulting in a more elegant look. Voile curtains allow in less light while increasing privacy in comparison to net fabric.

The most common drop lengths for traditional cafe net curtains are 18 inches (45 cm) and 24 inches (61 cm), although some dealers also offer custom sizing.
Measurements
One has to have both the drop length and the width measurements on hand so an order can be placed when the perfect style of net curtains are found. The drop (or length) stands six inches (15 cm) above the window while the measurements of width ranges from 1.5 times the length of the rod or track, to 2.5 times the length of the rod.
Kintu says net curtains need accessories for hanging them, which makes them look fine and stylish. “Net curtains are often installed in combination with a net wire and its installation is as simple as putting screws or hooks on the wall on either side of the window, and hanging the net wire between them,” he adds.
He explains that the wire comes with hooks and eyelets that screw into the ends of the wire after the wire has been cut to the correct length. Kintu says since the net wire comes in rolls of several metres, which is often enough for several windows, it comes with several pairs of eyelets and hooks. However, just two eyelets or two hooks are needed to install a set of curtains.
