She used her friend to get into my heart

I will never know if it was due to her machinations that I ended up with her, and not her friend like had been my intention, of which she was fully aware and was meant to play a crucial role.

I got to know Esther through a friend. We became ‘hi buddies’, I kept running into her in different places, but I did not get to know her until I found her with Carol, and everything changed; I wanted Carol.

No offence to Esther, she was a remarkably good looking woman, but, Carol made her look like the shabby cousin. I mean, the woman was hotter than the sun. I quickly rounded up Esther, told her of my intentions as regards Carol – she was not surprised, she had probably gone through this scenario many times – and to her credit, she was not offended that for the time I had known her, this was the most I had talked to her, and because of another girl.

She said she would help me in whichever way I thought would work. But as hot as Carol was, she was even rarer to get hold of. But Esther told me to be patient. I had no choice, since Esther wouldn’t give me her number until she had allowed her to.

Three weeks later, I had not managed to get Carol to meet up, or even to get her number.

This went on for the next five weeks – I only met her once at the cinema, she was rushing towards someone who looked like her father, we only said hellos – during which I met with Carol quite often. Our Friday spots were the same.

And I also met Esther during the week for ‘updates’ on Carol. She told me things were not going smoothly, Carol was having a lot on her plate, so I would have to be very patient, which would also work towards my advantage if Carol realised that I was the patient kind. In the sixth week, I got Carol’s number from Esther. She had given her consent, so I was good to go. I called her immediately, with Esther right there.

But the reception was cold – Carol sounded aloof, even when I introduced myself, she was just cold. It wasn’t a very long conversation, it left me rather depressed.

Esther compensated by taking me for Coffee, then movies, then drinks. We had a grand time, I soon forgot about Carol for the evening. Esther was a really cool girl.

Then Carol agreed to meet up. Esther was to come along too, she showed up on time, and we waited for a full hour for Carol before she sent me a text explaining that she could not make it, apologised without giving a reason, and that was it.

I found this rather more irritating than disappointing. I mean what happened to common decency? So I had my first ‘date’ with Esther, unawares, and that was the day we first kissed. Esther and I had a lot in common. We didn’t even talk about Carol this time.

I was too mad at her for standing me up. That we kissed seemed a surprise, and I could say it was by accident, but some things are meant to be. I just enjoyed her company too much. That was when the third girl, a friend of mine I consulted about this situation, told me to stop being blinder than a bat. Apparently men are frustratingly blind about the most obvious things – and see exactly what was going on.

A bit confused, I asked her to explain to me, in simple words, what she thought was going on. According to her, Carol was never in the picture at all. It had been Esther all along.

But I needed Carol to come into the picture for me to see Esther for who she was. And that is the real beauty, like an uncut diamond.

Using words like ‘uncut diamond’ in reference to Esther, I saw Esther for what she was; she wasn’t as curvy as Carol, but when the scales fell from your eyes and you saw Esther, that girl was worth a million Carols.
