Opposition sweep LC polls in Gulu

Gulu- Opposition parties in Gulu District have overwhelmingly won in local government sub-county elections that were conducted on Wednesday.






The polls involved the election of sub-county chairpersons and councillors.






In all the four divisions of Gulu Municipality, including Pece, Layibi, Bardege and Laroo, only Opposition candidates were voted.






Although the voting was delayed by an early morning downpour, results announced by Mr Benson Obete, the Gulu Electoral Commission returning officer at the district council hall, returned incumbent division chairperson, Mr Alfred Oluba who crossed from NRM to the Go Froward pressure group. He defeated four others in the race.






Mr Oluba polled 1,791 votes against his closest rival Mr Sunday Olanya (FDC) who polled 888 votes. Mr Jacob Otobi Ojok of NRM got 723 votes. Mr Walter Odong Wee yoo (UPC) polled 699 votes while Mr Aron Onekalit (Ind) got 144 votes.






In Laroo Division, incumbent chairperson, Mr Moses Abonga of FDC, won the race polling 1,498 votes against his closest rival, Mr Agwani Oyet Samuke (NRM), who got 1,007 votes.
Mr Martin Oruu (Ind) got 716 votes while Mr Richard Orac also an Independent, polled 89 votes.






Elections in Pece
In Pece Division, Mr Kelly Komakech of FDC defeated five others to take the seat. Mr Komakech is the outgoing speaker of Gulu Municipality Council.






Mr Komakech, who is also the FDC district publicity secretary, polled 1,289 votes against Mr Francis Okello Amodo’s (DP) 905. Mr Geoffrey Opio Twongweno, a local musician, polled 693 votes.






Others who competed in the race were Mr Geoffrey Otim (NRM) who got 334 votes, Mr Jacob Candano (Ind) who got 116 votes and Mr Andrew Labeja Olweny (UPC) who polled 89 votes.






In Bardege Division, Mr Patrick Lumumba Oola, who contested on the FDC ticket, polled 1,677 votes defeating NRM’s Geoffrey Akena who got 1,204. Mr Patrick Pius Ayella, an Independent polled 123 votes while Mr Patrick Okello, another Independent candidate, got 977 votes.






In the just concluded elections for district chairpersons, municipality mayor, and Members of Parliament, Gulu District mainly voted for Opposition candidates.
