MP-elect withdraws vote recount petition

Kitgum- Lawyers representing Aruu North County Member of Parliament-elect, Ms Lucy Achiro, have withdrawn their election petition case filed at Gulu High Court.

Through her lawyers, Ms Achiro had requested court to block the recount of votes ordered by Kitgum Chief Magistrate Court.

Mr James Nabinson Kidega who lost the election by two votes to Ms Achiro who got 8,579 votes, had filed an application before Kitgum Chief Magistrate Japyem Okongo disputing the poll results and seeking vote recount.

Mr Conrad Oroya, one of Ms Lucy’s lawyers, on Wednesday informed the Gulu Resident Judge, Lady Justice Margret Mutonyi, that they have considered withdrawing the case because the evidence for the vote recount were tampered with and destroyed.

Counsel Walter Okidi Ladwar, one of the lawyers representing the Aruu North County MP loser Mr Kidega, blamed the applicant (Achiro) and her supporters for deliberately destroying the evidence.

He also accused Aruu South County MP-elect, Mr Odonga Otto of mobilising youth to raid the police station where the ballots boxes were being kept with intention to disrupt the vote recount.

According to Mr Joseph Omona, the district returning officer, the decisions for Aruu North County elections are already before The Gulu High Court where final conclusions will come out on whether a rerun will be scheduled or by- elections conducted.
