MASAKA- The Democratic Party has taken a lion’s share of sub-county and division seats in Masaka District, according to results from the Wednesday local council elections.
All the three ruling National Resistance Movement members who have been in charge of the three divisions that make up Masaka Municipality for the last 10 years lost to DP flag bearers.
DP won the district chairperson seat as well as three other sub-counties outside Masaka Municipality, gathering six sub-county chairperson seats out of the nine sub-counties that make up Masaka District.
NRM got one seat, while independents got two seats.
The results
On Thursday morning, the Masaka District returning officer, Mr Nathan Nabasa, declared DP’s Denis Lukanga Majwala as the winner of Katwe/ Butego Division in Masaka Municipality after scoring 2,040 votes against Independent candidate Kibula Manooti’s 1,051 votes.
In Nyendo/Ssenyange Division, Michael Mulindwa Nakumusana (DP) trounced NRM’s Mayi Namayega. Mr Mulindwa polled 3,583 votes against Ms Namayiga’s 1,282 votes.
Kimanya/Kyabakuza Division
In Kimanya/Kyabakuza Division, DP’s Matia Kakooza got 2,245 votes defeating NRM’s Hamidu Bukenya, who polled 1,425 votes.
In Kyanamukaaka, Independent candidate Mesarch Ssebula scored 3,361 votes, beating NRM’s Mathias Ssekiwala, who garnered 2,917 votes while in Bukakata Sub-county, NRM’s Aloysius Jjuko gathered 2,676 votes, beating Independent candidate Joseph Lubega, who polled 2,559 votes.
In Kyesiga Sub-county, Wilberforce Kalyango (Ind.) won with 2,935 votes against NRM’s Abdul Nsubuga, who got 2,453 votes.
In Buwunga, NRM Francis Mugula lost to DP’s Francis Kimuli. Mugula polled 2,567 while Kimuli scored 5,457 votes.
Kabonera and Mukungwe sub-counties were won by DP flag bearers, Francis Sebula and Gerald Kawuma respectively.
